A firewall is necessary
The purpose of a firewall is to block unsolicited attempts to access your computer from the Internet, and provide your PC with a certain degree of stealth from malicious scans. There are two distinct types of firewalls: software and hardware. Software firewalls are programs that run on your computer, and hardware firewalls are additional devices added to your network.
The most common Hardware Firewalls are routers. If you have multiple PCs on your local network and you use a router, then you already have a hardware firewall in place.
Software firewalls are necessary if you use dialup and the service used does not include a firewall. Software firewalls are also recommended in addition to hardware firewalls to add additional security. Windows XP comes bundled with a network firewall which is enabled by default.
We recommend that any network using a broadband connections(Cable/DSL) implement a firewall in addition to a software firewall. Due to the many viruses, spyware, and malicious programs on the internet, your software firewall can become disabled often without your knowledge. With the presence of a hardware firewall, you will still be protected by your hardware firewall.
Firewalls do not protect you from viruses and/or spyware. The nature in which they infect your machine allows them to bypass your firewall, so up to date virus and spyware protection is a must!
